Just like the standard F-150, the Raptor's interior is comfortable and quiet at a standstill. The compromise for steering feel on the road is noticeable, but totally worth it. Out on the open dirt, you don't want tight, heavy steering. The steering is a bit light on the highway, but it works great when you're drifting the Raptor and sliding sideways at 50 mph across a sand dune. Massive suspension travel and all sorts of high-tech trail goodies combine to make off-roading an easy task for almost any driver. Whether you're on- or off-road, the Raptor feels like a true trophy truck that's adapted for the street. Also, Ford has teased an upcoming Raptor R version, and we suspect it will have a supercharged V8 of its own. But the Raptor is still plenty strong, and Ford has done some work to make the exhaust sound beefier than before.
So, yeah, the Ram TRX has the bigger mouthful of teeth thanks to its supercharged 702-hp V8. This is pretty much a carryover powertrain from the previous-generation truck. Powering the F-150 Raptor is a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 good for 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. This is still a big full-size truck, so it's not going to be as maneuverable as a Ford Bronco on a tight trail, but in general there's loads of capability here.

With the larger tire setup, the Raptor has 13.1 inches of ground clearance plus enhanced approach and departure angles. You can even go bigger and get 37-inch tires as an option. The Raptor comes standard with 35-inch tires, which are quite large for a pickup. That means more traction under acceleration.įurthering the truck's off-road capabilities are beefy Fox adaptive shock absorbers and big all-terrain tires. This new design provides more lateral stabilization and ultimately does a better job of keeping the wheels and tires on the ground.
Notably, the rear suspension switches from the regular F-150's leaf-spring rear suspension to a multilink coil-spring rear suspension. This new 2021 Raptor gets a thorough suspension overhaul compared to the standard F-150 so it can sail over ruts, bumps and air with the durability you'd expect from a desert-racing-inspired truck. Ford has a seriously impressive truck on its hands. Based on the also-redesigned-for-2021 F-150, the Raptor goes head-to-head with Ram's new 1500 TRX in a battle for off-road truck supremacy.
